The Eva Copper Mine (ECM) is located in North West Queensland approximately 75km north-west of Cloncurry. The greenfield Eva Copper Mine Project is a significant and strategically important project for Harmony Gold Mining Company Pty Ltd.

The Project will be the largest mining operation in North West Queensland with a minimum mine life of 15 years, and will involve mining multiple open cut pits providing copper bearing ore to a concentrator. The project is permitted, and the mine site will include development of these pits, a copper concentrator, associated processing and non-processing services and infrastructure including tailings storage facilities, waste rock dumps, water management facilities, power generation and an accommodation village.

Harmony is the largest gold producer, by volume, in South Africa owning and operating numerous mining and tailings retreatment operations. Harmony also owns and operates the Hidden Valley Mine in Papua New Guinea including holding 50% (Joint Venture with Newmont) in the Tier 1 Wafi-Golpu copper-gold project. These Papua New Guinea assets together with the Eva Copper Mine Project supported by the Harmony Australasia corporate office located in Milton, Brisbane.

Harmony is currently preparing to progress the Execution Phase of the Eva Copper Mine Project in support of achieving near term 1st production and are seeking highly motivated and experienced people to join our growing project delivery and operations teams. The Execution Phase will commence with front-end engineering and design, and in parallel preliminary site works will also be progressed in support of full project execution post final investment decision. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of defining, building and operating a major forward-facing metal mining operation that will offer employment opportunities across the project life cycle, from project definition and delivery into operations.

Reporting to the Executive General Manager – Growth Projects, the Engineering Manager will work closely with the Area Project Managers in providing an integrated multi-disciplinary engineering service to the project from design, through construction (site engineering/design compliance/change management), commissioning through to nameplate. In addition, The Engineering Manager will lead the development of the future asset management framework across all elements of the project and the maintenance and support until the project hands over to operations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage and coordinate a diverse team of engineers from different disciplines.
  • Proactively engage with consultants and contractors in the delivery of the project technical solutions.
  • Effective contractor management including clear communication, detailed planning, and ongoing supervision to maintain project schedule whilst upholding required standards.
  • Impactful communication and collaboration with consultants to ensure all technical aspects are addressed and integrated into the overall project strategy.
  • Ensure design work compliance with all relevant safety, health and environment policies, procedures, and best practice guidelines in conjunction with other Project disciplines.
  • Analysing products, services and procedures to increase productivity.
  • Consistently demonstrate leadership through behaviours aligned with the Harmony core values.
  • Management of engineering discipline budgets, schedules and project plans and procedures.
  • Assist in the development of departmental budget consistent with the project phase as well as company objectives and strategic plans.
  • Ensure engineering staff are appropriately trained and competent to carry out their roles safely and efficiently.
  • Lead the front-end engineering and process safety evaluations for the project.
  • Provide technical / engineering design support to the Area Project Managers and support operational process development (operational readiness).
  • Reviews project plans and proposals then develops project objectives and scope.
  • Study product design, requirements, performance standards, then determine project specifications.
  • Present cost estimates and performance standards.
  • Prepare status reports and regularly monitor budgets, consultants/contractors and schedules.
  • Working with the construction management team to ensure that the engineering design is construction driven.
  • Ensure that the quality of the engineering design meets project requirements.

What you will bring to Harmony:

  • Minimum 15 years’ experience within the mining industry in a Principal Engineer, Engineering Manager or equivalent role.
  • Bachelor of Engineering or related field of study.
  • Chartered Engineer Chartered Engineer with ability to obtain membership as a Registered Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ).
  • Proven team leadership capabilities and experience.
  • Proven people management skills and a sound record in managing relationships.

Location

This role will be based at our Brisbane office in Milton during the project design phase with regular travel to site as required.
